Viagra, Cialis Use Not Harmful to Vision
Healthy men who took Cialis or Viagra daily for six months did not develop any significant vision problems, according to research findings published in the latest edition of the Archives of Ophthalmology.
Addressing widespread apprehensions about the popular impotence medications, US researchers came to the conclusion that the use of such erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs did not have any noteworthy vision-related side effects on the otherwise healthy men during a six-month testing period.
To test the findings, a research team Indianapolis’ Lilly Research Laboratories conducted a randomized study of 244 healthy men or those with mild ED, aged 30 to 65 years, and having no vision-related problems. Out of these, 85 were administered 5 milligrams of Cialis, 77 were given 50 milligrams of Viagra, and the remaining 82 men took an imitation pill, everyday for six months.
Among the 194 men who completed the study and eye examinations no significant differences were found in vision between those taking the ED drugs and the placebo groups, according to researchers.
“Our results indicate that there is no cumulative damage or effect of clinical significance for either 5mg of Cialis or 50mg of Viagra taken daily for six months,” the report authors noted.
After Viagra and Cialis were put on the market, the FDA stated that there were a “small number” of reports of vision loss, which prompted a labeling change on packages of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra in 2005.
At the time. the FDA said “It is not possible to determine whether these oral medicines for erectile dysfunction were the cause of the loss of eyesight or whether the problem is related to other factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or to a combination of these problems.”
