eDrugstore MD Chantix prescription information
Chantix (varenicline) is an oral prescription medication to help adults stop smoking.
Directions
Choose a quit date when you will stop smoking, and start taking Chantix 7 days before your quit date.
This lets Chantix build up in your system. You begin by taking one tablet a day for three days, then
increase to two a day until treatment is over. Take Chantix after eating and with a full
glass of water. You can keep smoking during during the first week, but make sure you try
to stop smoking on your quit date. Some people need a few weeks for Chantix to
work. Most people will keep taking Chantix for up to 12 weeks.
Precautions
Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions including if you have kidney problems or need
kidney dialysis. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of Chantix if you are pregnant or plan to
become pregnant. Chantix has not been studied in pregnant women and it is not known if Chantix will
harm your unborn baby. Although it was not studied, Chantix may pass into breast milk.
Side effects
The most common side effects of Chantix are nausea, changes in dreaming, constipation, gas and vomiting.
If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. A serious allergic reaction to
Chantix is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic
reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not
listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you use, especially: insulin, asthma
medicines, and blood thinners. When you stop smoking, there may be a change in how these and other
medicines work for you. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. |
